Breaking the beauty standards: embracing body positivity

From the media to social media, we are surrounded by images of “perfect” bodies, and ‘perfect’ faces that can make us feel inadequate and unworthy.

Many influencers promote unrealistic beauty standards, such as the “perfect” body type, flawless skin, and a specific style or fashion sense. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and pressure to conform to these standards, which can be harmful to mental health and self-esteem.

What their followers forget is that these influencers sometimes use filters and AI tools to enhance their appearance.

This has led to an epidemic of body shaming, which can have serious negative consequences on our mental health and overall well-being.

What is body positivity?

Body positivity is not about promoting unhealthy lifestyles or neglecting our health. It’s about recognizing that we are all unique individuals with different body shapes, sizes, and features. It’s about accepting and loving ourselves for who we are, and not comparing ourselves to others.

One of the key aspects of body positivity is challenging the beauty standards that have been imposed on us by society. These standards often promote a narrow and unrealistic ideal of beauty, which can make us feel like we don’t measure up.

Importance of body positivity

body positivity is learning to love and care for our bodies. This means treating ourselves with kindness, nourishing our bodies with healthy food, and engaging in physical activity that we enjoy. It also means embracing our flaws and imperfections and recognizing that they make us unique and beautiful.

Body positivity is not just a personal journey, but also a social and political movement. It’s about challenging the systems and structures that perpetuate beauty standards and discrimination based on body size, shape, and colour. This includes fighting against fatphobia, ableism, and racism in the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries.

Some tips to embrace body positivity Challenge your inner critic:

Start by questioning the negative thoughts you have about your body. When you hear yourself say something negative, ask yourself if it’s really true or if it’s just a harmful belief you’ve internalized.

Practice self-love and self-care

Treat yourself with kindness and compassion. This can mean taking a relaxing bath, getting a massage, or spending time in nature. Make sure to prioritize activities that make you feel good.

Surround yourself with positive influence

Seek out people and media that promote body positivity and self-love. Follow social media accounts and read books and articles that promote body acceptance and diversity.

Stop comparing

Remember that everyone is unique and has their own journey. Focus on your own progress and avoid comparing yourself to others.

Embrace your unique features

Celebrate the things that make you unique, whether it’s a birthmark, freckles, or a particular body shape. These features are what makes you one-of-a-kind.

Wear clothes that make you confident

Wear clothes that fit well and make you feel comfortable and confident. DO NOT worry about following trends or fitting into a certain size.

Focus on health, and not appearance

Take care of your body by eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and engaging in physical activity that you enjoy. Focus on how you feel, rather than how you look.

Finally remember to treat yourself with kindness, focus on your unique features, and surround yourself with positive influences. By promoting body positivity, we can create a more inclusive and accepting world for everyone.
